Modern version of Firefox for Windows 8 delayed, might release only in January

For those of you waiting for a Modern UI-based Firefox, here’s some bad news. Mozilla has revealed that the development and release of the browser with a revamped UI will be delayed thanks to “slower than expected” progress. A report by ComputerWorld has revealed that thanks to the delay, the touch-based browser will not be making its way out till at least late January now. There’s a consolation, though – the Firefox “Preview Release” will still come bundled with the Aurora build of Firefox 26 for Windows desktop when it launches today, according to the original plan.

Earlier, the browser was supposed to be released in December this year with an overhauled UI that sticks to Microsoft’s Modern guidelines. ”The goal of the Metro Preview Release is to gather feedback and defects from the larger Aurora community," Mozilla wrote in notes published on its website from a planning meeting that took place last week. "Whether or not the Metro Preview Release will graduate from Aurora to Beta and Release channels is still to be determined. At a minimum, it should significantly increase the number of testers and feedback."This version has been a long time coming for both Microsoft and Mozilla. Windows 8 was released back in October 2012 and the touch-compatible version of Firefox was announced in March this year. Interestingly, the target release for the project was Firefox 14. Thanks to all the nudges and delays that have been a part of this project, the Modern-UI based Firefox will only be out with Firefox 27 in January next year.
