Attempts by troubled smartphone company BlackBerry to roll out its popular BlackBerry Messenger mobile platform to Android and iOS have been hit by additional delays, making it unlikely that the cross-platform apps will ship this week.
Andrew Bocking, head of BBM at BlackBerry, provided an [a href=" http://blogs.blackberry.com/2013/09/bbm-for-android-iphone-launch-update/"official update[/a] on the rollout of BBM on Android and iPhone. He stressed again that the delays were due to an unreleased, older version of the BBM for Android app that was posted on numerous file sharing sites last week. This older version resulted in "volumes of data traffic orders of magnitude higher than normal" for each active user and hit BlackBerry's system in "abnormal ways".
The version the company was were planning to release on Saturday addressed these issues, however Bocking explained that the company could not block users of the unreleased version if it went ahead with the launch.
"We attempted to address the problems caused by the unreleased version throughout the day on Saturday, but as active users of the unreleased app neared a million – and accelerated – it became clear that the only way to address the issue was to pause the rollout for both Android and iPhone," Bocking said.
"We are also making sure that the system is reinforced to handle this kind of scenario in the future. While this may sound like a simple task – it’s not. This will take some time and I do not anticipate launching this week".
He said the company will continue to provide updates on InsideBlackBerry.com and through @BBM on Twitter.
