BlackBerry Messenger spotted running on Windows

It looks like BlackBerry wants to take its Messenger much further than any other smartphone-messaging-centric company has. The company unveiled a Windows version of its BlackBerry Messenger at the BlackBerry Jam Asia 2013 event in Hong Kong. The company even went as far as to state that BBM might even make it to OS X. However, release dates don’t seem to be a thing BlackBerry does anymore, so there isn’t any for the computer versions of the messaging service.BlackBerry-centric website BBin managed to get a picture of BBM running on Windows, and from the looks of things, the overall visual design of the service will be the same as it is on BlackBerry 10 devices. It is worth noting, however, that the app doesn't seem to be able to run on its own. Instead, it will require the smartphone version of BBM to run.

This will be done through BlackBerry Bridge, where users will have to link their smartphones to their computers through Wi-Fi. Through this, messages that are sent to mobiles are routed to the desktop version.BlackBerry's primary competition for BBM, including the likes of Line, WhatsApp and WeChat, don't seem to have any desktop versions of their messaging services. This move could give BlackBerry the push it oh-so-desperately needs to succeed in the current over-saturated smartphone messaging market. After a befuddled attempt at launching BBM on Android and iOS last weekend, it is currently only available on BlackBerry devices, but is expected to hit iOS and Android some time soon.
