Android users should finally be able to get hold of BlackBerry's hugely popular BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) app this Friday, September the 20th, if a last-minute release rumour proves accurate.
The news should be taken with a pinch of salt, as it was announced on Twitter by a Samsung employee from Nigeria. The tweet said BBM on Android would initially be available only to Samsung smartphone users.
According to the initial tweet, the Korean electronics giant would have a three-moth exclusive on BBM for Android before users of other handsets could begin using the app. It further suggested that only selected Samsung Galaxy devices would be able to run the code during the exclusive period.
When it does finally hit Google Play, BlackBerry has previously said the app will be free and need Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean OS to run.
However, after this rumour began circulating BlackBerry moved to distance itself from the comments, stressing that BBM on Android would not be released on an exclusive basis to any one handset manufacturer. However, the company did not confirm or deny the rumoured dates.
BBM communications director at BlackBerry, Victoria Berry, in a statement to CrackBerry said only that the app was coming "soon".
"The excitement around the upcoming BBM launch on iPhone and Android devices seems to know no bounds. Although I’m a big fan of this passion, I want to clarify that no-one will have an exclusive on offering BBM. We’ll be bringing the app to Android and iPhone users across the globe soon," she said.
BlackBerry first said in May that BBM for iOS and Android would ship this summer. If you can't wait to download the APK, XDA Developers has it available for download, but it's useless until Blackberry starts up its servers.
