Zynga and Bang With Friends settle trademark dispute

“We’re all friends here,” seems to be the thought for the day as reports have emerged that Zynga and Bang With Friends has finally settled their trademark lawsuit over the “With Friends” suffix. Zynga and the makers of Bang With Friends seem to have made a settlement on Monday, court filings show, thereby ending an ongoing trademark infringement case that was fired by the gaming company this year. The court papers were revealed by AllThingsD and a spokesperson from Zynga confirmed the news to the publication.

Rebranding under way

“Zynga Inc. and Bang With Friends, Inc. are pleased that they have reached an amicable resolution of their dispute,” a Zynga Spokesperson said. “Although the terms of the settlement are confidential, Bang With Friends, Inc. acknowledges the trademark rights that Zynga has in its With Friends marks and will be changing its corporate name and rebranding its services in the near future.”For those who’ve been living under a rock for a while, Zynga is the creator of games “With Friends”. The franchise includes the likes of Words With Friends, Scramble With Friends and more from the game maker. Bang With Friends, on the other hand, was an application that let users hook up with their Facebook friends discretely. The Spokesperson said that Bang With Friends has already started the rebranding process, details of which are now put up on TheNextBang.com. Bang With Friends has been having more troubles with its name and contents besides its run-in with Zynga. The application was yanked off Apple’s App Store earlier this year, but no reason was given for it. It’s no secret that Apple is uncomfortable with anything remotely sexual in nature, but that’s a topic for another time. The application then made a comeback in late August, having been rechristened Down. No more “banging” for this modest application now. It’s now to be seen how the makers of this bold application will work their way around the “With Friends” suffix.

New leaked image shows Nexus 5 vividly

Leaks surrounding the much awaited Nexus 5 keep popping up. A new post on MacRumours now offers what could be the clearest look we have had at the next Nexus phone. While an earlier leak showed off most of the internal specifications expected, the new image shows a slate-gray device. While responding to questions in other posts on the forum thread, the source said that the handset’s back cover offers a feel that is similar to the Nexus 7. The author also said that the display of the new smartphone is only “ok”.

The device was first heard about last month, when a Google employee was caught with a new Nexus device while showing off the company’s new Android 4.4 OS coming with the codename KitKat. Since then, we have managed to get more than enough information to paint a pretty clear picture about the device. Chief among the information leaked out is the strong possibility of the Nexus 5 supporting LTE bands. While there is no real way to validate the authenticity of the image, it should be noted that the image does seem to line up with the information we have so far about the rumoured device. If the information leaked is valid, though, it is highly possible that we will be seeing Google’s next Nexus sooner rather than later.

From what is known so far, it looks like the device will be 131.9mm tall and 68.2mm wide. Contrary to earlier reports, the current source now states that the device will come with a 4.96-inch screen. The device is also said to come with a Snapdragon 800 SoC as well as 2GB of RAM. The model is also slated to come with 16GB of internal memory. It has also been indicated that the new Nexus phone will run on Android 4.4. KitKat.

On the camera front, the handset should come with an 8-megapixel primary camera. There doesn’t seem to be word on image stabilisation, though. Also expected is a 1.2-megapixel front camera. In terms of connectivity, all the usual suspects should be seen like Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC as well as GPS connectivity. The handset should also come with wireless charging built in. Rounding up the speculated features is a 2,300mAh battery. While there is no official word on the release date or price, information about a possible October 31 launch date has been circulating for a while now.

Google Play Music goes live in 7 more countries, India still not on the list

Google seems to be keen on bringing all its services available to as many countries around the world as possible. The big news this time is that Google is rolling out Play Music as well as All Access for seven more countries. Sadly, India is nowhere on the radar yet. The Play Music and All Access feature has arrived in European countries like the Czech Republic, Finland, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Netherlands, Russia and Switzerland, according to a report by Android Police. The news of Google Play Music and All Access’s rollout to more countries comes only a few days after it was revealed that Google’s Play Books had finally made its way to New Zealand and a few more countries in Asia.

No India on the horizon yet

With this rollout, Google Play Music is now available in 20 territories the world over – with the company’s main focus on the US and Europe – and All Access is available in 19 of these countries, with the exception of Germany. For those not in the know, Google Play Music is the Internet giant’s music store while All Access is the music streaming platform associated with it. All Access was introduced earlier this year at the Google I/O and was made available for about US $10 in available areas.India, as well as a host of other countries, is missing out on gaining access to Google Play Music, thanks to legal constraints. There’s hope, however, for India, since Google has introduced services like Play Books – and more importantly – Play Movies in the country.Play Movies was introduced in India back in March, post the Google I/O. The service lets users rent movies for as little as Rs 80 and even purchase it for about Rs 190. The availability of the Movies section of Google Play should be a good reason to pave the way to make Google Play Music and All Access available in the subcontinent.

Post causing a mini-panic with its recycled ID programme, Yahoo! is trying hard to show that it is committed to securing user accounts on its service. Yahoo! has announced that it is adding yet another layer of security for users on Android and iOS – App Passwords. The feature will do exactly what the name suggests – it will let you retain control over your applications even if it’s lost or stolen. This also means that you can keep your phone around nosy relatives and friends and they still won’t be able to access your Yahoo! Mail on the device.

Essentially, App Passwords will work as temporary passwords that you can enter into your native iOS and Android apps for added protection. It will also let you authorise a device to access Yahoo! apps. Here’s how the feature works: You can head on to your account settings and turn on sign-in verification to generate a one-time password. You will be able to enter the password in your mobile application. Your device will then be logged in and you won’t have to repeat this step again. However, if you wish to add another device to your Yahoo! account, you will have to go through this step again.You can then view a page where all your apps and devices will be listed out and revoke access to any one of them right away from one place, especially if you’ve lost your device. Essentially, even if you forget to logout of your session, the person who finds your mobile will still be locked out of your Yahoo! apps.This seems to be a great move by Yahoo! who’s been facing flak for its lack of security, especially when it comes to the recycled ID programme. Yahoo! started to offer old IDs to new users after “recycling” them for a good few days. Unfortunately, it has emerged that despite the purging of the account, new users are still receiving mails meant for past owners of the account, including vital details like bank account numbers and social security numbers.

Facebook Graph Search will now let you search for posts and status updates

When Facebook rolled out Graph Search earlier this year, it almost looked like it lacked a punch that could have made the feature indispensible. The social networking website, however, has been working on beefing up its Graph Search product even as it rolls it out to the masses. Facebook has now announced that besides profiles and general queries, Graph Search will also be able to fetch posts and status updates for you too. When we first went hands-on with the Graph Search on its release, it seemed like a pretty useful tool for power-Facebook users. However, the lack of being able to search for posts and status messages seemed too glaring an omission to ignore. Facebook has now finally managed to include updates from within profiles onto Graph Search, making it a lot more powerful.

Search for posts made at a particular location

In a blog post explaining how this feature will work, the Facebook team wrote that you will now be able to enter in queries like “Posts about Breaking Bad by my friends,” to see what your friends have been saying about that particular topic. Of course, you can even search for topics using hashtags like “Friends who posted about #goodbyebreakingbad.” You can also ask Graph Search to fetch you “Posts by my friends from last month,” or status updates put out from a particular location asking it to show, “Posts written at the White House.” If you’re feeling nostalgic, you can even take a trip down memory lane by asking Facebook to show you “Posts I commented on” or “My posts from last year.”

Of course, like all Graph Search features from earlier, you will only be able to search for and view results of posts that have been shared with you or are public. BlackBerry 'committed' to bringing BBM for Android, iOS; still no timeframe given

BlackBerry is back in the news; this time with more information given out about the stalled cross-platform version of is instant messaging service, BBM. While BBM for iOS and Android had been slated for release last week, technical difficulties proved to be a road block in the planned roll out on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Now, delayed by over a week, the chances of a quick launch seems to be decreasing by the day. While the crossover app has been picked up by a few lucky users in New Zealand, Australia and India, the mass launch had to be stopped when a leaked Android APK managed to throw a wrench in the company's server banks. While there has not been much spoken about bythe company about this for the last few days, a new tweet from the official BBM account does help to show that BlackBerry is working to address the issue.

Still trying to bring #BBM4All

The account, which was set up just before the cross-platform app was set to launch, has now said that BlackBerry is “still 100% committed to bringing #BBM to Android and iPhone.” This indicates that the company still has its teams working out on how to block the leaked APK so that its servers can load back to a manageable level.

While the tweet does give hope, what it does not provide is a possible timeframe for what the cross-platform app can be expected. The new tweet is instead asking users to sign up at the BBM website for notifications. Last week, BlackBerry EVP of BBM, Andrew Bocking had said that the company did not see a high likelihood of the app being launched soon. Quite a few sources have been talking about the app – when it does come out – to extend to platforms beyond the big two, Android and iOS. BlackBerry Messenger creator Gary Klassen recently said that BBM could be headed for other platforms, according to the Mobile Indian. This has fueled speculation that the app could be seen on Windows Phones soon. An earlier report also corraborated the Windows Phone app support claim. The Canadian smartphone maker has also hinted at the possibility of BlackBerry 10 finding its way to desktops, with BBM being one possible application on the list.

New picture of the upcoming Nexus 5 leaks

China threatens closure of mobile news apps amid Internet crackdown

China on Monday launched a crackdown on several mobile news applications that provide news information services without approval from government regulators, threatening to shut down those who refuse to "rectify".The ruling follows a government campaign to curb "online rumours", as the government tries to rein in social media. The State Internet Information Office said that some of the news applications carried "pornography and obscene information and harm the physical and mental health of youngsters", and others published false information.

Crackdown on apps

Some mobile news applications also provide a channel for subscribers in China to read articles published by foreign media outlets whose articles have been blocked in China, such as the New York Times. Mobile news applications identified include Zaker, which said it had more than 17.5 million users at the end of April, and Chouti whose slogan is: "Publish all that should not be published."The state regulator has told authorities to further crack down on illegal mobile news applications, by requiring them to "rectify" according to the laws. The government will close down and ban those who refuse to rectify "to maintain order of news dissemination on the mobile internet".

China's top court and prosecutor issued a regulation in September specifying that people will be charged with defamation if online rumours they create were visited by 5,000 internet users or reposted more than 500 times. Those responsible can be sentenced to three years in jail. Lawyers and activists called the latest crackdown a significant, if crude, expansion of powers to police the Internet and a blow to those who rely on microblogs to disseminate information that is often not monitored as strictly as traditional media.ReadMore:Android Games

Google pays $55 million tax in Britain on 2012 sales of $5.5 billion

Google , which has been grilled twice in the past year by a UK parliamentary committee over its tax practices, had a UK tax bill of 35 million pounds in 2012, on sales of $5.5 billion to British customers, its accounts showed.The Internet search giant paid a tax rate of 2.6 percent on $8.1 billion in non-U.S. income in 2012, because it channelled almost all of its overseas profits to a subsidiary in Bermuda which levies no corporate income tax, the group's accounts show. Corporate tax avoidance has risen to the top of the international agenda in the past year with the G20 and G8 groups of leading economies promising to get to grips with the growing practice of companies diverting profits from where they are earned and into tax havens.

Hefty taxes

Google said it follows all tax rules in every country where it operates and that it does not pay much tax in Britain because its profits are not generated by its UK employees. Google UK Ltd, and other subsidiaries across mainland Europe, pay little tax because they are designated as providers of marketing services to Google Ireland Ltd, the Dublin-based subsidiary whose name appears on invoices to most non-U.S. clients.Google declares little profit in Ireland because the unit there sends almost all of the profit earned from the non-U.S. clients to the Bermudan affiliate, in the form of licence fees for the use of Google intellectual property. The parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) grilled Google's Northern Europe boss, Matt Brittin, in May after a Reuters investigation showed the company had advertised dozens of jobs for salespeople, despite Brittin telling the committee last year that the company does not pay tax on its UK revenues because it does not conduct sales from British territory.A PAC report later accused of Google of using "contrived" mechanisms to avoid tax and called on the government to change the rules on taxing multinational companies. Google's Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said attempts to force technology companies to pay more tax could stymie innovation. Nokia's cheap smartphones drive Windows in Europe: Research

Microsoft's Windows platform has reached a 9.2 percent share in the smartphone operating system (OS) market in key European markets, driven by Nokia's low and mid-range models, market research firm Kantar said on Monday.During the three months to August, the Windows Phone platform reached a market share of over 10 percent for the first time in France and Britain, with 10.8 percent and 12 percent respectively, the researcher said. Nokia, which earlier this month agreed to sell its mobile phone handset business to Microsoft, is the main user of the Windows platform and the driver behind the increase.

New app uses augmented reality to show internship opportunities

College students and graduates know getting an internship can be the gateway to a job but landing one can often be difficult.However, a new mobile app from Nokia is aiming to change that by showing them job opportunities nearby. By aiming a smartphone at a nearby building that houses companies users will be able to see available internships there. The app is from Internship Lens, which was created by Finnish communications corporation Nokia for its Lumia Windows-based smartphones.

"You're able to point your phone at a building and see the jobs available at companies there, and also the people you know at that company," said Bryan Biniak, a vice president at Nokia, said in a telephone interview from Espoo in Finland. "People are often looking for a place near their home, or along the transportation line," he added.Nearly half of internships in the United States turned into full-time jobs this year, according to The National Association of Colleges and Employers. The app uses augmented reality, a technology that overlays information on a real-world display, to show internship listings. Users can also browse for opportunities on a map.The app connects with professional and social media websites LinkedIn and Facebook to identify people who might be able make an introduction to the hiring manager. Biniak said the odds of getting a callback for an internship can increase greatly when there is a mutual connection. "It might be a friend or family member or your friend's dad who works at that company," he said.The free app lists more than 75,000 internships from 45,000 companies across the United States through a partnership with internship listings site Internships.com. Users can also upload resumes and apply to jobs through the app. Biniak said the motivation for creating the app was to expand the number of unique apps available for Nokia Lumia users. The company also created JobLens, available in the U.S., Canada and the Britain, which has similar features but for full-time positions.Several other apps, including career management website Monster's BeKnown, also help interns find jobs and show how they are connected to hiring managers. BeKnown is available for iPhone, iPad, Android, Blackberry and a Facebook app. It finds mutual connections through Facebook. Toshiba to cut 3,000 staff in ailing TV division

Toshiba Corp said on Monday it would cut 50 percent of staff in its loss-making TV unit and cease production at two of its three overseas factories before the end of this fiscal year.Toshiba said it would increase outsourced production to 70 percent from 40 percent and reduce its global staff in the division by 3,000, with two-thirds of those positions overseas. In July it said it would move 400 staff, included in that figure, to other business units. The company did not say which two of its three factories in China, Indonesia and Poland it would close.

Toshiba's TV segment has been in the red for the past two years due to weak global sales, partly due to a slowdown in Europe and a fall in domestic demand after a short-lived boost from the switch to digital broadcasting. In July the company announced plans to cut a combined 10 billion yen in costs in its television and PC businesses this fiscal year, and then double that figure in the following year to cope with weak demand. IBM settles with US Justice Department over job listings

IBM has agreed to pay $44,400 in civil penalties to settle allegations that certain of its online job postings preferred foreign workers with temporary work visas over U.S. citizens, the U.S. Department of Justice said.IBM had placed certain online job postings for application and software developers that contained citizenship status preferences for F-1 and H-1B temporary visa holders, the Justice Department said in a notification posted on its website late on Friday. F-1 visas are issued to overseas students studying in the United States, while H-1B visas are provided to foreign nationals with technical expertise in specialized fields.

The Justice Department said the job ads violated the anti-discrimination provision of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), which states employers may not discriminate on the basis of citizenship status "unless required to comply with law, regulation, executive order or government contract." As part of the settlement, IBM also agreed to revise its hiring and recruiting procedures and train its human resources employees to ensure compliance with the INA. Google Play unveils three new Application vending machines in Japan

Most of the vending machines technology takes it's birth from Japan, the country who's not at all a stranger to these kind of electronic machines. And we here just don't talk about any technology, but Mobile Technology, yes that's what we're here for, and this new Google Play vending machines too have a same story to share like.

The new machines from Google Play, the digital application distribution for Android will be selling 18 different gaming applications, categorized in two, free and paid. How does this traditional vending buddy basically works from Google, Inc? To get it worked, you'll need an Android smartphone with Near Field Communication (NFC) enabled and running Android version 4.0 or above. Choose the game you want to download and place your selection on the giant screen of the unit, which will then send the selected app to your smartphone which is being rested on the machine's cradle with a few animations (similar to the drinks vending machines), where your handset will automatically start the download of the selected game via NFC.

Well if you don't have a required device, you needn't worry, the machine is too offering to deliver it's customers with a Google Nexus 4 to try out this new technology from the Japanese, which will then be recollected by the assigned Google employees.
