Next-gen Amazon Kindle Paperwhite with 330ppi display reportedly coming in 2014

Amazon seems to be intent on releasing updated versions of the Kindle Paperwhite as often as possible. Reports have emerged that two months after releasing the new Kindle Paperwhite, Amazon is going to refresh its line of e-readers early next year.TechCrunch has reported that it has seen a prototype of the next-gen Kindle Paperwhite which will be more in line with Amazon’s Kindle HDX tablets line. The newer Kindle Paperwhite will reportedly have a high resolution, with a pixel density of 330ppi. Besides the higher resolution, the new Paperwhite will be getting a few hardware improvements, including a front screen flush with the edges of the device, a more matte glass being a part of it. They’re even apparently lighter than the model released this year.

A newer Kindle Paperwhite in works?

The device has been codenamed Ice Wine and will feature a higher resolution that is now being seen on not just Amazon’s own Kindle Paperwhite but even Kobo e-readers. Screens for both the companies are manufactured by E Ink. While Amazon is not intending to have a major software update for the 330ppi Paperwhite, it will definitely be upscaled in order to take advantage of the new resolution. Amazon is also said to be working on a new typography for the new device, maybe even a custom built one. Another improvement that may come along with the Ice Wine Paperwhite is that the edges of the device will turn into squeezable buttons, giving off haptic feedback when activated. Instead of having to stretch your thumb to hit buttons and change pages in an awkward fashion, you will just be able to give it a squeeze to change pages. An ambient light sensor is also said to be a part of the new Kindle. It will work on adjusting the screen brightness automatically depending on how much light there is in the room. Of course, since what TechCrunch saw was a prototype, there could be a high chance that the final product released may have features different from what’s being reported right now. The newer version of Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is reportedly set to hit markets as early as the beginning of Q2 2014.
