Xbox One firmware upgrade brings bug fixes, available now

Microsoft has released the first major firmware update for the Xbox One, fixing issues with SmartGlass integration, multiplayer glitches, dashboard performance and wireless connectivity.

Both Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's rival PS4 have had a somewhat sticky launch with reports of hardware failures, software bugs and network issues - and that's when people aren't actively encouraging users to brick their devices with claims of hidden backwards compatibility modes. Both companies are working hard to address issues with their respective gaming platforms, however, and a big part of that is releasing updated firmware files with bug fixes.

The latest update for the Xbox One, released late last night and automatically downloaded to any console with an active internet connection and in Instant On standby mode, brings with it a range of fixes for some of the more niggling bugs experienced by early adopters. According to Microsoft's official change log, the update fixes problems using SmartGlass with the console set to Connected Standby, problems with gamers being kicked out of multiplayer gaming sessions and being unable to rejoin, and notification problems that can result in users missing important messages.

Other bugs fixed include issues with poor performance of the Dashboard, the console's main user interface, and connectivity problems when using the Xbox One with selected wireless networks. Finally, the upgrade apparently tweaks the console's TV services for improved scalability in the future - although this does not, it seems, come with a fix for the 50Hz judder issues.

For users whose consoles haven't automatically downloaded the update, it should appear as a mandatory install the next time the console is switched on and connected to Xbox Live.
