Samsung Electronics have announced what it claims as the world's first 1TB mSATA SSD - the 840EVO mSATA drive. It measures just 3.85mm thick and weighs a mere 8.5 gms. It comes in capacities such as 120GB, 250GB, 500GB and 1TB. The mSATA SSD is expected to hit international markets by the year end and is targetted at ultra-slim notebooks. Indian availability dates aren't out yet.
The 840 EVO mSATA SSD comprises four 128Gb NAND flash chips
The 1TB 840 EVO mSATA offers 98,000 random read and 90,000 random write IOPS whereas the sequential read and write speeds are pegged at 540MB/s and 520MB/s respectively. It uses Samsung's 128Gb NAND flash memory based on the 10nm process technology. There are sixteen 128Gb (16GB) NAND dies per package, instead of the traditional eight, totalling to 1TB of storage.“With the new mSATA SSD line-up offering up to 1TB of memory and an optimized software tool, we expect that consumers can enjoy high storage volume and performance on ultra-slim notebooks besides desktop PCs,” said Unsoo Kim, Senior VP, memory brand product marketing, Samsung Electronics. The new mSATA line-up is also offered with Samsung Magician 4.3, a software solution that allows the maximum of over 1,000MB/s sequential read speed on RAPID ( Real-time Accelerated Processing of I/O Data) mode, which is a performance level of approximately twice that of a typical SATA SSD and ten times of an average HDD. Pricing details are not yet out.
