O2 launches Xbox One and PS4 smartphone bundles

O2 hopes to tempt buyers this Christmas with the promise of cheap Xbox One and PS4 consoles - but buyers should be careful to add up the total cost of the deal.

The company has announced a pair of contracts which see the next-generation consoles, extremely sought-after following their sell-out débuts late last month, sold for under £100 - providing, that is, the buyer signs up for a 24-month mobile contract at the same time.

The company's Xbox One deal sees the buyer receive the console, a copy of FIFA 14, 12 months of Xbox Live Gold subscription and a Nokia Lumia 1020 Windows Phone handset for a £99.99 up-front fee - a considerable saving on the £429.99 recommended retail price of the console alone. However, that price only applies when the bundle is purchased as part of a 24-month contract which costs an impressive £52 per month - although that does include unlimited cross-network minutes and unlimited texts, albeit with a somewhat stingy 1GB of inclusive data allowance.

Those more interested in Sony's PS4, meanwhile, can pick up the console with a copy of Killzone: Shadow Fall, a year's subscription to PlayStation Plus (a requirement, for the first time in the PlayStation brand's history, for online multiplayer gaming) plus a Sony Xperia Z1 Android handset for £89.99 up-front. As with the XBox One bundle, this is then followed by a 24-month contract at £52 with the same amount of inclusive minutes, texts and data.

The actual mobile contract is set at just £17 a month, with the remaining £35 going to pay off an interest-free loan on the supposed £999.99 value of the bundle minus the up-front payment. Once the two years is up, the monthly cost will drop down to the £17 of the contract.

For those eager to get a console by Christmas, it could prove a tempting deal - although buyers should be aware that the 'interest free' loan will actually cost around £80 more than buying the phone and console separately. Details of the deal are available on the O2 website.
