EA halts Battlefield 4 expansion development to fix main game

Electronic Arts has apologised for continuing issues Battlefield 4, promising that it is ceasing work on all other projects, including future downloadable content (DLC) until the main game is working as it should.

Launched late last month as the latest entry in the Battlefield series, the game has been beset by a string of issues ranging from server stability, which developer DICE blamed on a distributed denial of service attack, to one-hit kill issues, crashes and performance problems on both the Windows and console versions.

The Windows release has already received a hefty 1GB patch to resolve at least some of the problems, but plans to do the same for the console versions hit a last-minute delay when the company declared additional testing was required. At the time, it looked like the delay of the patch would also push back the release date of the game's first DLC, the China Rising pack.

Thankfully, the company was able to release China Rising on-schedule, which should come as welcome news for those whose versions of the game include free access to the DLC pack. However, Dice has has now stated it will not work on any more DLC until the main game is fully operational.

"We know we still have a ways to go with fixing the game — it is absolutely our number one priority," a company spokesperson told gaming site Polygon. "The team at DICE is working non-stop to update the game. Since [the] Battlefield 4 China Rising expansion pack was already in the final stages of development by the time issues began with Battlefield 4, we decided to fulfil our promise to deliver it this week, but we're not moving onto future projects or expansions until we sort out all the issues with Battlefield 4. We know many of our players are frustrated, and we feel their pain. We will not stop until this is right."

The company has not, however, provided a time frame for the release of patches for the game's issues.
