Nokia finally has some good sales numbers to display. Its Lumia Q3 volumes increased globally 19 percent quarter-on-quarter to a record of 8.8 million units, clearly reflecting the demand from consumers. The Q3 volumes increased globally 4 percent quarter-on-quarter to 55.8 million units. The company tells us that they have shipped some 36 million units globally since Q4 2011 till the end of October 2013. While the Lumia 520 is one of the key drivers for the Windows Phone market share in India, its other smartphones are also doing well. Vipul Mehrotra, Director & Head, Nokia Smart Devices, IMEA told tech2 that the Lumia 720, Lumia 925 and Lumia 625 are doing exceedingly well. However, he didn’t specify any exact sales numbers. These devices are available at varying price points starting at Rs 8,500 to Rs 31,500.

The data from IDC suggests that the Windows Phone platform saw an increase in shipments of 156% year-over-year for the third quarter. According to their data, they shipped 9.5 million WP devices in Q313 and Nokia was responsible for 93.2% of all those 9.3 million Windows Phone handsets. India is an extremely important market for Nokia. Its Asha range of devices fit in perfectly in the Indian market. Recently, Nokia introduced some key factors for the line-up. WhatsApp has been made available to Asha Platform devices, starting with the Nokia Asha 501 recently. Support will now be available for all three new devices – 502, 503 and 500. Mehrotra tells us that the company will continue churn out similar Asha devices, but didn’t mention what we can expect in the near future or indeed, whenMehrotra also told us that the Lumia 520 has been a huge catalyst for Windows Phone, opening up the ecosystem to a new price point and newer consumers. Consumers reaped benefits of a high-end smartphone at an affordable price point. And that’s the proposition the forthcoming Lumia 1520 will also look at. It’s not a budget handset by any means; it is a uncompromised high-end smartphone. So, we wouldn’t be surprised if the 1520 is priced over Rs 50,000.
But those looking for a Lumia 520-kind of device, can look forward to the Lumia 525. Though, Mehrotra didn’t mention any specific dates for their launches in India, Nokia will continue to spread its products across price points as it fights back against the Android domination in India.
