LG is almost definitely preparing to launch a new Android tablet, but rumours pointing to an 8in Nexus 8 tablet built for Google may be wide of the mark - source code files discovered earlier today point to a Google Play edition of the company's own G Pad 8.3 instead.
The code, which was discovered sitting on LG's open-source code distribution website by redditor numerlo, explicitly mentions the G Pad 8.3 Google Play Edition in its files. This means LG will be removing its custom user interface in favour of the stock Android UI, which according to the source code will be the latest 4.4 KitKat release rather than the older 4.3 Jelly Bean.
A pair of leaked images, posted by myLG phones confirm this, showing LG logos rather than Google's own Nexus brand.
That doesn't mean potential customers should write it off, though. The G Pad 8.3 is already one of the best compact Android tablets on the market, with a Full HD 1,920x1,080 resolution display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage and dimensions that rival Apple's Retina iPad Mini. Even if LG doesn't change any of the hardware, it will compare favourably with Google's own Nexus 7 as it will get the latest Android updates far quicker than the existing model.
LG has yet to formally confirm the rumours, so we'll have to wait until an official announcement to learn if they are accurate - however strong the evidence.
