Apple reveals US government spying requests

Apple has published some limited details of information requests made by the US government to harvest data about the technology company's customers.

"We believe that our customers have a right to understand how their personal information is handled, and we consider it our responsibility to provide them with the best privacy protections available," Apple said.

In terms of the total number of law enforcement account requests received the US was the runaway leader with 1000-2000 requests. The UK was second with 127 requests, while Russia only made one request.

While the information is interesting, Apple was at pains to say that it has only reported the information it is legally allowed to share. The company said it will continue to advocate for greater transparency about the requests it receives.

"At the time of this report, the US government does not allow Apple to disclose, except in broad ranges, the number of national security orders, the number of accounts affected by the orders, or whether content, such as emails, was disclosed," Apple said.

"We strongly oppose this gag order, and Apple has made the case for relief from these restrictions in meetings and discussions with the White House, the US Attorney General, congressional leaders, and the courts."

Apple went on to stress that its business does not depend on collecting personal data and it has "no interest" in amassing personal information about customers. It also pointed out that personal conversations are encrypted over iMessage and FaceTime.

"Despite our extensive efforts in this area, we do not yet have an agreement that we feel adequately addresses our customers’ right to know how often and under what circumstances we provide data to law enforcement agencies. We believe that dialogue and advocacy are the most productive way to bring about a change in these policies, rather than filing a lawsuit against the US government," Apple added.
