Xbox One developer settings hack could lead to boot loops, warns Microsoft

Microsoft has warned Xbox One owners not to follow leaked instructions for turning their consoles into development boxes, as it can result in a 'boot loop' that will leave the device useless.

Prior to launch, Microsoft promised that it would be bringing the ability to create content directly to consumers by enabling selected tools typically reserved for special 'dev box' consoles on standard hardware. Although not available at launch, Microsoft has continued to state that the development kit release is on its roadmap - but a leak has jumped the gun and revealed how to enable some features immediately.

A Reddit user was among the first to discover the technique for activating the development settings on a retail console, but was quickly inundated with warnings from developers that changing any of the settings that appear in the resulting screen, in particular the 'Sandbox ID' of the console, can cause it to continuously reboot.

Microsoft has issued a formal warning against using the technique to gain early access to the development settings. "Changing the settings in this menu is only intended for developers for Xbox One, and this alone does not turn the console into a development kit," a company spokesperson said. "We strongly advise consumers against changing these settings as it could result in their Xbox One becoming unusable. Customers who have put their consoles into this developer setting can revert by restoring factory defaults under Settings, System, [then] select Restore Factory Defaults."

So far, Microsoft has not provided a time-frame for when the developer tools will be officially unlocked on the company's freshly-launched next-generation console.
