India’s Smarty Ring brings instant smartphone alerts to your fingers

Seems like everyone has a wearable idea these days. But Smarty Ring stands out. For one, many might not even notice you wearing it, seeing as it slides on to your finger. The Chennai-based makers of the ring have started a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo and are aiming to collect $40,000. Currently, it has amassed over $31,000 with 51 hours to go before the campaign ends.

The Smarty Ring

Dedicated music controls on the ring

So what exactly does Smarty Ring do? The waterproof Bluetooth-enabled ring allows users to check alerts from their smartphone and manage calls right from their finger. A companion app can be used to configure the alerts you wish to receive and the ring’s function. The ring doubles up as a watch, when not displaying any notification. It can be used to trigger apps on your phone, such as the camera or switching profiles. All standard stuff so far. Here’s the good stuff: Dedicated music controls on the ring let you control playback of songs on your smartphone. Smarty Ring also acts as a phone finder. So if you walk more than 30 feet away from your phone, the ring will beep to let you know you’ve left your device behind. According to the Indiegogo campaign, Smarty Ring will also deliver real time updates from Facebook, Twitter, Hangout & Skype.

Looks like one of those mood rings

Perhaps the coolest feature is that the ring comes with its own wireless charging base, which can be used to charge the wearable along with a compatible smartphone. The wireless charger looks rather cool, if images on the website and Indiegogo are to be believed. Here’s a video of the Smarty Ring in action.

In terms of battery life though, we don’t expect too much from a ring, but the campaign says it will deliver 24-hour battery life, which sounds rather neat to us considering the size. At the moment, it is said to be compatible with Android and iOS devices, as long as they have Bluetooth 4.0 capabilities. Currently, the campaign is taking donations in slabs ranging $1 to $1250, with different perks for each slab.
