Drawing attention to the perils of social networking comes a piece of news from Mumbai where a 14-year-old girl allegedly committed suicide after being harassed by a stalker on Facebook. The stalker, reportedly a minor, has since been arrested. The girl, a resident of Kandivali, a western suburb in the city, was allegedly being harassed by a friend following which she ended up taking this extreme step. The girl’s family alleges that the 16-year-old boy had posted offensive content on her Facebook account and even accosted her when she was on her way to her tuitions, according to reports.
Perils of social networking
The family claims that they had complained to the police a few days before the girl committed suicide. The girl’s father says that even though they tried to complain, there was no interest seen from the police. Ideally, a case with the cyber crime cell could also have been registered. The Kandivali police have now, however, registered a complaint under Section 305 of the IPC, which deals with abetment of suicide of a child or an insane person. The father has claimed that the minor boy would post obscene messages on the girl’s Facebook account for the past few days and may have sent her a disturbing message right before she committed suicide too. H Pimple, Senior Police Inspector of the Kandivali police station, was reported telling NDTV that they will go through not just the girl’s social networking profile but will also check messages and her WhatsApp account as well to substantiate the claims against the minor boy. The 16-year-old boy, meanwhile, has been sent to a juvenile home. (With inputs from agencies)
