Opera's new Android tablet browser comes with new UI, host of fixes

After launching a dedicated browser for the iPad, Opera has now shifted its focus to Android tablets. The company has now introduced the Opera 18 browser for Android, which it promises will bring a “top-notch web experience to your Android tablet.” The browser is now available for download on the Google Play Store and is applicable for devices running on Android 4.0 and above. The official release finds the company clearly saying that it did not just update and scale up its smartphone browser for tablets. According to the online listing, Opera 18 for Android is based on Chromium 31. Along with a new UI, the browser comes with improvements in the search engine list as well as a new remote debugging feature. The browser also packs in a bunch of fixes as well as various stabilisation and performance improvements.

Opera has gone into some detail about the other changes and new features seen in tablet-centric browser. The user interface now comes with the most accessed functions like back, forward buttons as well as the menu page being located where your fingers naturally rest while using a tablet. The UI for the browser’s Discover feature, which allows users to surf through interesting news, sports and feature stories, has also been tweaked. Users can now swipe from right to left on the Speed Dial start screen to access a personalised selection of fresh content from their region. The news feed can also be customised to fit the user’s interests. Another feature mentioned is Off-Road mode, which lets the user go online in “rough conditions”, such as a crowded, free Wi-Fi hotspot in a cafĂ©. The mode also saves you money while roaming with your data plan as it compresses data traffic to minimise data usage. Another feature called Speed dial, which the company touts to be an Opera innovation, had also been integrated. The mode allows the user to customise the browser UI with large, square buttons that makes adding, organising and accessing frequently visited webpages easier.
