Owners of the Samsung-manufactured Galaxy Nexus handset have petitioned Google over is decision not to release an upgrade to Android 4.4 KitKat for the device.
Andorid 4.4 introduces a range of improvements over earlier versions. Perhaps the biggest of these is better support for lower-specification devices, with Google saying that KitKat will run happily on just 512MB of RAM - half that required for Android 4.3 Jelly Bean.
That would appear to be good news for owners of older devices, but Google has indicated that only its most recent Nexus handsets will be upgraded to Android 4.4. The Galaxy Nexus, released two years ago, is the cut-off point. Neither the Galaxy Nexus nor any of its predecessors will receive an official Android 4.4 upgrade.
Owners of the device have responded with alarm to Google's decision, with a petition attracting over 17,000 signatures at the time of writing. The petition argues that although the handset is outside the 18-month support window Google is enforcing, it easily meets the specifications for Android 4.4, including having 1GB of RAM.
To push Google into making a public comment on the matter, the petition's organiser Max Duckwitz has printed off all the signatures so far and mailed them to Google's Android head Sundar Pichai. So far, however, Google has been silent regarding the petition and its aims beyond reiterating that it will not offer Android 4.4 for any Nexus devices older than 18 months.
