Nokia's Lumia 2520 ad takes a dig at the Apple iPad Air

All’s fair in love, war and the world of technology. Companies have been poking fun at rivals and their products for a good while now, so much so that no one bats an eyelid anymore. Continuing this tradition is an ad spot for Nokia Lumia 2520 that takes a dig at the newly-released iPad Air. Portraying the iPad as the “wrong tablet” the ad follows a hipster who sings praises of the tablet to his group of friends. There’s a “negative Nancy” in the group who keeps asking him questions about the tablet, presumably things like its battery life and lack of keyboard.

He runs into negative Nancy every time there’s a spot of trouble with his iPad. He occasionally runs out of battery and feels too irritated to use its on screen keyboard. Every time the iPad acts up, he’s forced to make use of the laptop he lugs around everywhere. He then notes that negative Nancy has a shiny new tablet that pretty much doubles up as a laptop as he wonders if he’s chosen the wrong tablet.Once you watch the ad you will realise that the iPad is not referenced directly but talking about its “thinner than pencil” appearance and talks about it having been to space are hints enough. Microsoft had earlier pitted its Surface tablets against the iPad and Nokia seems to have taken a leaf out of its ally’s book here. It is, however, kind of odd to see the iPad’s battery being ridiculed. Similarly, there isn’t exactly a dearth of third-party keyboards for Apple’s tablet either. In any case, taking Smart Alec digs at rivals on mediums including social ones seems to be the way to go for Nokia now. Though, truth be told, we’re kind of enjoying some of them.
