Xbox One Kinect capabilities detailed

Microsoft has revealed more details regarding the improvements made to its Kinect depth-sensing camera for the Xbox One, which will allow it to hear and understand two people speaking at the same time, and even to lip-read in a dark room.

Originally introduced as an add-on for the Xbox 360, Microsoft's Kinect is undeniably clever. Using both colour and depth-sensing cameras combined with positional microphones, the system can track a user's movement and recognise his or her voice. Since launch it has found considerable use in casual motion-based games and for fitness software, although its attempts at breaking into mainstream gaming have been less successful.

Microsoft had originally promised that the system was sensitive enough to track individual fingers and would be able to use that facility to recognise sign language - something the low resolution of the original Kinect platform failed to offer.

Now, Microsoft is saying that the new Kinect, which comes bundled with all Xbox One consoles sold, will help deliver on the promises of the original. At last weekend's Eurogamer Expo, Polygon reported that Microsoft's Phil Harrison told attendees that the system will be sensitive enough to watch for the movement of players' lips even in a dark room, and use that information to recognise two different people talking at the same time.

Coupled with other details already released regarding the sensor's capabilities, including its ability to estimate a player's heart rate, map facial movements to 1,400 points and track 25 joints across six people simultaneously, it's clear the company is hoping for big things from its next-generation Kinect.

The new Kinect sensor launches with the Xbox One console on the 22nd of November.
