Welcome to Facebook’s company town where you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave. The social networking giant seems to be creating a walled-in housing community for Facebook employees that will have all the comforts of the world and still be five minutes away from work. Needless to say, the campus is supposed to spring up in and around Facebook’s Menlo Park campus in California. Facebook is thought to be one of the coolest places to work in with a relaxed, informal atmosphere. Valleywag has managed to catch hold of planning documents that show Facebook seems to be coming up with a state-of-the-art complex that will have about 394 housing units.
Would you live in this town?
The town will be called Anton Menlo and will be situated within a two-mile distance from Facebook’s headquarters. Now, the company that has amenities like a hammock for employees to rest in while they work will definitely have big plans for a city, right? Apart from the usual cafes, convenience stores and sports bars, the town is set to be a pet-friendly one with pet spas, doggy day cares and a park for employees with animals. There's also an extensive recreational area planned, with facilities for many games and sports. “We’re certainly excited to have more housing options closer to campus, but we believe that people work at Facebook because what they do is rewarding and they believe in our mission,” a Facebook Spokesperson told The Wall Street Journal about the upcoming offline project of the company. While it all seems like fun and games on the outside, Facebook’s idea of a company town raises some important questions. How many people would like to stay closeted in an office connected environment 24/7? A company town essentially will be an extension of the company. The town is to be kept closeted away from the regular world with a six feet tall wall. Sounds ideal? But If Facebook somehow manages to bungle this, it could turn into a psychological case study on how not to house your employees.
