Samsung Galaxy S4 hit by battery flaw

Samsung has confirmed that selected Galaxy S4 units suffer from a faulty battery, which loses charge and can even swell up to the point of damaging the phone's casing, but promises to replace all faulty units free of charge.

Over the past week, reports have been circulating that batches of Galaxy S4 smartphones sold world-wide are being supplied with faulty batteries, with some sources going so far as to suggest that mobile networks and retailers are seeing return rates as high as 30 per cent. Although not all customers are affected, the problem is severe enough for Samsung to have gone on-record as stating that it will replace any faulty batteries free of charge.

"We are aware of this issue, which has affected a limited number of customers. We ask all affected customers to please visit their nearest Samsung Electronics service centre, where they can receive a replacement battery for free of charge," a company spokesperson explained to Trusted Reviews earlier this week. "We remain committed to providing the best possible user experience for our customers".

Symptoms of the flaw include progressive and rapid loss of battery capacity, with the phone noticeably lasting a shorter time per charge on a daily basis, excess heat from the battery compartment, and possible swelling of the battery itself which curves the normally flat surface and which can make it difficult to secure the rear battery cover to the phone.
