Samsung Galaxy Round could be a limited run exclusive to Korea

The recently-unveiled Galaxy Round curved smartphone could be little more than a test-bed for the technology, with an insider source suggesting the company will be producing very limited numbers and has no plans for an international launch.

The Galaxy Round, arguably the most eye-catching of Samsung's expansive Galaxy Android device range, was announced by the company earlier this month following weeks of rumours relating to the company's plastic-backed display technology. Its 5.7in Full HD display curves along its width in order to fit more comfortably within the user's palm - at the expense of being unable to sit flat on a table.

Samsung confirmed that it would launch the device in its native Korea, priced at 1.09 million won (around £630, excluding taxes) but it was silent on international availability. Apparently the reason for that is the device is far from ready for true mass production.

According to an anonymous insider source speaking to SamMobile, the Galaxy Round will be produced in strictly limited quantities, helping to explain its high retail price, and is unlikely to be launched outside Korea. That doesn't mean future curved smartphones won't appear internationally, but those who had hoped to pick up a Galaxy Round may need to invest in the air fare to do so.

The LG G Flex, meanwhile, is expected to receive an international launch next week. Like the Samsung Galaxy Round, the G Flex features a curved display but in the vertical rather than horizontal axis.
