Alongside the D5300 reveal, Nikon has just announced a new FX-mount prime lens - the AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G. Designed specifically for the company's full-frame digital SLR range, it's the first time a 58mm prime has been a part of the Nikon line-up since 1977.
The lens takes design cues from Nikon's Noct-NIKKOR range, which has near-legendary status among photography professionals. It is comprised of nine elements in six groups, weighing a not insignificant 385 grams. It has a 72mm filter thread and uses Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for quiet autofocus.
According to Nikon, the new lens offers significantly increased sharpness, contrast, and resolution compared to existing 50mm primes, along with greatly reduced coma flare and smooth bokeh.
Hiro Sebata, Nikon UK's Product Manager of Lenses, Accessories & Software, said "Despite Nikon’s constant improvements to the optical and mechanical performance of NIKKOR lenses, its only once in a while that a lens like the AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G comes along.
"Its qualities and characteristics transcend standard measurement conventions and can really only be appreciated when viewing the final image. Few lenses go down in history as “classic,” and this is poised to be one of them".
The AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4 will go on sale from the 31st of October here in the UK, with an RRP of £1599.99.
