Microsoft returns Windows RT 8.1 for Surface RT to the Windows store

Microsoft has released a new version of its Windows RT 8.1 upgrade for Surface RT tablets, following reports of a bug that would corrupt the boot file and prevent the tablets from loading following installation.

Originally launched alongside Windows 8.1 for PCs and the company's Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2 tablets, Windows RT 8.1 was designed to address numerous criticisms of the company's touch-centric operating system. Released as a free upgrade, Windows 8.1 is a mandatory installation: support for Windows RT and Windows 8 is to be cancelled after a two-year grace period.

Sadly, some users attempting to update their Surface RT tablets to the latest release ran into a problem. A bug in the update would corrupt the boot configuration data file, preventing the tablet from loading its operating system when it reboots following the upgrade. Although Microsoft says only a very small number of users were affected, it pulled the update from the Windows Store pending an investigation.

With that investigation now complete, and whatever issue resulting in the flaw having hopefully been fixed, Microsoft has rereleased Windows RT 8.1. Users wishing to update to the latest release can find it in the Windows Store, while those who have already been bitten by the bug and left with an unusable tablet should download Microsoft's recovery image to restore their system.
