Apple kicked off last night's press event with a refreshed MacBook Pro line-up, ahead of the iPad Air and iPad Mini 2. The addition of the latest 4th Generation Intel Core processors bring the range up to par with the recently-refreshed MacBook Air.

Compared to last year's 13in model, the 2013 refresh gains a 2.5GHz Haswell CPU with Intel's Iris integrated graphics. The aluminium chassis has been thinned down to just 18mm and it's also lighter at 1.5kg.

Other new additions include faster PCI-E solid state storage, improved 802.11ac Wi-Fi and a Thunderbolt 2 port which is up to twice as fast as the original for file transfers.

The new 15in model, meanwhile, replaces the 2012 model with an Intel Crystalwell 4th generation Core processor and Iris Pro integrated graphics. You'll also be able to specify a GeForce GT 750M dedicated GPU with 2GB of RAM, for improved graphics performance. It also gains the same Thunderbolt 2 port, faster PCI-E SSD storage and 802.11ac Wi-Fi as the 13in model.

Combined with OS X Mavericks, the new processors should help improve battery life significantly over the outgoing models. Apple says the 13in model will last nine hours, up from seven in the 2012 model, while the 15in model gains an extra hour to last eight on a single charge.

Laptops with Intel Iris graphics are few and far between at the moment, so we'll have to wait until we get one of the new models in the building to see how it performance. They may not be able to play the latest games, but should still be a significant upgrade over last year's MacBooks.

Both new models have the same Retina display as last year's versions. Apple has now discontinued the non-Retina 15in MacBook Pro, but it's still possible to buy a 13in non-Retina model for £999.

Prices for the 13in model will start from £1,099 for the 13in model, which will come with a 2.4GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD and Intel Iris graphics. The 8GB RAM/256GB storage model will cost £1,249 and the top-end 2.6GHz i5 model with 512GB of SSD storage will cost £1,499.

The 15in MacBook Pro will start from £1,699 with a 2.0GHz Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage, with prices rising to £2,199 for a 2.3GHz Core i7 CPU, 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD and an Nvidia GeForce GT 750M graphics card.

Both new MacBook Pro models are available to buy today.
