Apple has confirmed that a "very limited number" of iPhone 5S handsets contain defective batteries, considerably shortening their runtime per charge, but promises it is replacing any affected phones directly with customers.
The iPhone 5S is Apple's latest flagship handset, which launched alongside the lower-specification iPhone 5C. It's the first iPhone to be based on a 64-bit processor, the first iPhone to include an integrated fingerprint scanner to boost security and the first iPhone to use a 'motion coprocessor' for adjusting the handset's various sensors without taxing the main processor.
Sadly, a number of users have complained of poor battery life and elongated charging cycles, with Apple confessing that the flaw appears to be a manufacturing defect. "We recently discovered a manufacturing issue affecting a very limited number of iPhone 5S devices that could cause the battery to take longer to charge or result in reduced battery life," Apple's Teresa Brewer told The New York Times. "We are reaching out to customers with affected phones and will provide them with a replacement".
The all-in-one design of the iPhone 5S means that users who have been unlucky enough to pick up a faulty model will need to have their handset swapped out entirely, rather than just removing and replacing the battery. Apple has indicated it knows which batches of phones are affected and will be contacting customers directly, but users who are concerned their handsets may suffer from the flaw should contact Apple directly for clarification.
