Top Microsoft engineer who worked on wearables quits to join arch-rival Google

A distinguished software engineer and designer at Microsoft, Blaise Agüera y Arcas, has left the company to join arch-rival Google. He helped develop Microsoft’s Bing Maps service and also the company’s image-stitching software Photosynth. According The New York Times, Agüera y Arcas will now work on machine learning at Google, something Microsoft’s research teams have been focussing on lately. Agüera y Arcas had joined Microsoft in 2006, when his Seadragon startup was acquired by the software giant. He was involved in various other product development projects including augmented reality, wearable computing and natural user interfaces.

Key engineer leaves Microsoft to join Google

In a blog post, he has revealed that the decision to leave Microsoft is the hardest decision of his life. He said, "The company's leadership has been consistently good to me over these past eight years, and it has been a time filled with creativity and growth and good friends. It’s painful to leave behind so many wonderful ongoing projects, and even more so to leave behind such a great team."It should be noted that just recently Microsoft had released a Photosynth preview. It includes new methods of stitching photographs and imagery to create 3D scenes. Agüera y Arcas’ departure is being seen as a key loss for the software giant.
