Technology was on India’s mind this year with Apple’s latest release, the iPhone 5s taking third spot in the most talked about topics, followed by new RBI honcho, Raghuram Rajan and India’s Mars mission Mangalyaan. As far as checking into locations in India goes, there’s a shocker. If you thought a public place or a heritage monument would walk away with the honours, Sukhdev Dhaba at Murthal in Haryana is the most checked into place in India. The Golden Temple in Amritsar, Bangla Sahib, Connaught Place, India Gate and the Taj Mahal follow suit. Globally, the most talked about topics included Pope Francis, the term “election”, the Royal Baby, Typhoon, Margaret Thatcher and the viral dance form Harlem Shake. For those of you who’re wondering how Facebook measured these statistics, it’s pretty simple: it looked at which life events and places generated the most posts and check-ins in 2013, and then used the data to create global and country-level rankings.Facebook also measured how many Facebook posts in 2013 mentioned a specific topic and then ranked those topics based on the overall number of mentions to create each list. Mentions include both the term itself and related hashtags. For example, both “Here at the #Sachin’s last match” and “Proud to be at Sachin’s last match” was calculated as part of the buzz related to a single event.Apart from the buzz in India, Facebook has also activated the Year in Review tool for users. You will be able to see the most important events from your year on Facebook and also share the summary on the website for your friends to read.
