Google lets users make their own Street View maps

Google has tweaked its Maps website to let users create personalised versions of Street View 360-degree images that feature places that they want to share in 3D with other users.

To get started, users need to create photo spheres using an Android smartphone or a DSLR camera and then share them on Views. Next, they select the photo spheres from their profile and use Google's new tool to connect them together. Once the photo spheres are connected and published, people can navigate between them on Google Maps, just like they can in Street View.

You can get a more detailed explanation at the Google help centre.

"We hope this new feature will enable people to share and witness the beauty and breadth of our planet through Google Maps," Evan Rapoport, Maps & Photo Sphere product manager at Google, explained. "Whether you’re photographing exotic islands or your favorite neighborhood hangout, mountain peaks or city streets, historic castles or your own business, we’re thrilled to see the places you love coming to life".

"Starting today, it's now possible for you to build your own Street View experiences," Rapoport said.

"Using a new feature in our Views community, you can easily connect your photo spheres to create 360ยบ virtual tours of the places you love, then share them with the world on Google Maps. Creating Street View from your photo spheres is as easy as connecting the dots into what looks like a “constellation” of stars. You can even connect your photo spheres to our own Street View panoramas."
