ZTE to enter smartwatch market in early 2014

While companies like Samsung and Sony are trying to make a dent in the smartwatch market, Chinese smartphone maker ZTE is apparently going to join the ranks too. According to the Wall Street Journal, the company is going to unveil a smartwatch in the beginning of 2014. It will apparently be similar in design to many of the smartwatches out there in the market right now, such as the Samsung Galaxy Gear or the Sony SmartWatch 2.Head of ZTE's handset marketing strategy Lu Qianhao has told WSJ that the smartwatch will only be sold in China at first. The company does hope to eventually expand to European and American markets as time goes on, though.

The ZTE smartwatch could pose quite a threat to the Galaxy Gear

The ZTE smartwatch doesn't yet have a name, and will only be compatible with the company's own smartphones. It might, however, get support for other Android smartphones in the future, according to Qianhao. ZTE is also apparently looking at other avenues of wearable computers, so we might eventually get to see a ZTE-made version of Glass. In order to draw a larger consumer base, ZTE hopes to price its smartwatch competitively. Qianhao has told WSJ that it will cost significantly less than the Galaxy Gear does so as to appeal to China's cost-conscious consumers. “We are focusing on the mainstream market,” he said. Despite the lower price, the smartwatch is expected to be fully-featured with many of the capabilities of the Galaxy Gear.ZTE, despite having made quite a name for itself, still ranks seventh in China in terms of shipment volume. Qianhao hopes that the smartwatch will make the company's smartphones more attractive to buyers.
