Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox One, which is due to launch later this month, will not be able to play 3D Blu-ray discs until an unspecified later date.
Speaking to CNET, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that although the Xbox One will play traditional 2D Blu-ray videos, the console won't support 3D Blu-ray content. That's despite it supporting 3D playback in certain games.
Microsoft's next-generation games console is being positioned by the company as the only device you'll need for home entertainment. Beyond games, the console includes Skype, Internet Explorer, pass-through HDMI functionality and a list of streaming services which, sadly, does not include the popular BBC iPlayer.
The Xbox One is also the first console from the company to support the Blu-ray disc standard, allowing for games and media to be loaded from the high-capacity format. First used by Sony in its PlayStation 3 console, and again for the PS4, the extra space available on Blu-ray discs compared to DVDs can also be used to store two video streams for 3D content - but that's not something the Xbox One will support.
It's possible the console may receive a firmware update to add 3D Blu-ray playback at a later date, but Microsoft has offered no concrete reassurances. Sony's PS4, meanwhile, will play 3D Blu-ray discs once owners have updated to firmware version 1.5.
The Xbox One is due to launch in the UK on the 22nd of November.
