Porsche Macan unveiled ahead of April 2014 availability

The Porsche Macan has been officially unveiled at the Los Angeles Motor Show, ahead of the company's crossover hitting the streets in April 2014.

Originally teased back in 2012 as the company's initial attempt to blend its iconic design with a sports utility vehicle (SUV) base, the Macan - named for the Indonesian word for 'tiger' - is designed to compete with the like of the BMW X3.

Three engine options have been confirmed: a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 335bhp petrol model hitting 64mph from stationary in 5.4 seconds and with a top speed of 158mph will form the entry level tier in the Macan S; a recalibrated version of the Cayenne's 3.0-litre turbo-diesel is an alternative, offering 255bhp and a 0-62mph time of 6.3 seconds with a top speed of 143mph. The flagship Macan Turbo, meanwhile, boasts a 3.6-litre twin-turbo petrol engine offering 394bhp for an impressive 0-62mph time of 4.8 seconds and a 165mph top speed.

The range includes a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch gearbox as standard, with a Sport button switching shift times and increasing the throttle response while adding extra weight to the electric power steering. An optional Sports Chrono package shaves 0.2 seconds from the 0-62mph sprint time across all models.

All models in the Porsche Macan range include adaptive four-wheel drive as standard, switching from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive if a slip is detected, with an off-road mode engaging a true four-wheel drive mode for improved traction.

UK pricing for the Porsche Macan starts at £43,300 for the entry-level Porsche Macan S, rising to £59,300 for the Porsche Macan Turbo. Additional options include a panoramic sunroof, 16-speaker Burmester stereo, adaptive cruise control, 20in or 21in rims, a choice of three suspensions, and the aforementioned Sports Chrono package. UK orders are open now.
