Motorola officially launches budget 4.5-inch Moto G starting at $179

After weeks of rumours and speculation, Motorola has finally unveiled the Moto G. Announced at an event in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the device will be sold on the Google-owned company’s official website in the US. The company will be rolling out the handset without a contract, SIM lock and an unlockable bootloader for $179 (Rs 11,300 approx) for the 8GB model, while the 16GB variant will set users back $199 (Rs 12,600 approx). The Moto G, according to the company, will be available in at least 30 countries with 60 Google partners by 2014. The handset will be available in Brazil from this week, and will be released in Latin America, Europe, Canada and parts of Asia in the coming weeks. The company, at the announcement, said that it was working with its partners to ensure that the purchase cost to consumers would stay as low as was possible. Check out to official video to see what the phone looks like:

A quick look at the specifications reveals that the Moto G sports a 4.5-inch HD “edge-to-edge” display with a resolution of 720x1280 pixels, amounting to a pixel density of 329ppi, and a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 screen. The handset runs Android 4.3 out-of-the-box for now, though the company has “guaranteed” that the smartphone will be getting Android 4.4 KitKat by January next year. Under the hood, the device comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (Cortex-A7) processor clocked at 1.2GHz along with an Adreno 350 GPU and 1GB of RAM. In terms of photography, the device comes with a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED flash as well as a 1.3-megapixel front shooter. The rear camera comes with HD (720P) video recording support. The handset, in terms of protection, sports a water-resistant nano-coating on the inside and outside. Rounding up the package is a 2070mAh battery, which the company claims will give 30 percent more talk time than Apple’s current flagship, the iPhone 5s. Miscellaneous features like FM Radio and a removable curved back panel were also added to the new device. The company has also announced some accessories, including “Shells”, Flip Shells, Grip Shells and some music accessories like JBL wireless speakers for the device. Some proprietary features like Motorola Assist, Motorola Migrate have also been integrated. The company is also offering 65GB of free online Google Drive storage. Here’s a quick look at the specifications of the Motorola Moto G:

  • 4.5-inch HD “edge-to-edge” display, 720x1280 pixels, 329ppi

  • Bluetooth, Wi-Fi

  • 8GB, 16GB internal memory variants, no mention of expandable memory

  • 5-megapixel rear camera, LED flash; 1.3-megapixel front camera

Indian users have some good news in store for them, as the announcement saw Motorola finally confirming that it would be re-entering the Indian market with the Moto G, with a launch slated for “early-January 2014”. The company also announced that the device would come with a dual-SIM variant aimed at select markets. The company went to great lengths about the adverse impact that custom skins and bloatware have on the Android experience, even naming a few like Samsung’s TouchWiz and HTC’s Sense UI. This is especially surprising given that Samsung now accounts for a huge part of Android’s success. The Moto G, however, comes with software optimisation that apparently ensures that there will not be any duplicate apps come pre-installed, making the most important tasks of the smartphone continue to work seamlessly.
