Instagram (finally) launches on Windows Phone

Instagram, the filter-heavy social photography app, has finally made the jump from iOS and Android to Microsoft's Windows Phone mobile operating system - although only in beta form and with several features missing.

As you would expect from a Windows Phone app, Instagram includes Live Tile support to bring some colour to your home screen, as well as fast resume for multitasking. It is, however, only supported on Windows Phone 8 devices, so older WP handsets are out of luck.

Unlike the Apple or Google versions of the app, Windows Phone 8 handset owners aren't able to take photos directly through the Instagram app. Instead they get redirected to Microsoft's own built-in image gallery, where they can choose from an existing photo or shoot another one using the default Windows Phone camera app.

There's also no ability to record short videos, and currently no way to tag people in your images. The full selection of hipster-baiting filters have all made their way from iOS and Android, however.

Instagram Beta is available to download now from the Windoes Phone store.
