Gmail will let you save directly to Drive, preview files in inbox

Google has bolstered Gmail’s connect with Google Drive further today. Users will now be able to save email attachments to Google Drive directly, instead of going through their Downloads folder, which can get pretty tedious at times. In a blog post announcing the integration, Scott Johnston, Director of Product Management at Google writes that you will now not just be able to save files directly to Google Drive, you will be able to access them directly from any other device like your phone or tablet. The process of saving will be done even without you having to leave your Gmail inbox.

When you open your Gmail inbox now, you will be shown preview of the files as attachments within the mail. You will be shown a preview of all kinds of files from photos to videos to spreadsheets and even PDFs. Then, you will have the option of either downloading it to your computer or simply storing it to your Drive, making it accessible on other devices you own too. The best bit about this new feature is that you will now also be able to see previews of these files in full screen, right in your inbox. You would previously have to click on a file for it to open up in a new tab where scrolling was a big issue. Now, a full-screen will solve this issue. You can even browse through multiple attachments at once.

This new feature also ties in with another one announced by Google yesterday. The company said that it was introducing new quick action buttons for easier use in Gmail inboxes. Now, when someone shares a Google Docs file with you, a simple click on the button which will pop up in the subject line of the mail will take you to the Drive simply. Johnston in the blog also announced that in less than two years of its introduction, Google Drive is now serving 120 million active users. If you can’t see the new feature of saving right to the Drive currently, Google says that you should be able to within the next week, as it is still in the rollout phase.
