Don't panic: Xbox One has DLNA, will play CDs

Microsoft has finally one-upped Sony's PlayStation 4 in the ongoing pre-launch battle for customer approval, confirming that the Xbox One will support DLNA multimedia playback.

Sony confirmed late last month that the PS4, due to launch in less than three weeks, will not include media-centric features which exist on the last-generation PlayStation 3. The ability to play MP3s and audio CDs, have your own music playing in the background of a game without paying a subscription fee and DLNA media streaming are all sadly absent.

The company has since tempered consumer backlash on its decision to remove these features from the PlayStation brand by promising to 'feed back' to developers, but it has stopped short of announcing any plans to add the features back in a future firmware update. That has left a gap open for its rival Microsoft, which the company has unsurprisingly chosen to exploit.

Speaking to Penny Arcade, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that the Xbox One will happily play audio CDs and MP3s, as well as stream video, music and photo content from any DLNA-compatible media server. Additionally, the console supports Microsoft's own Play To standard, allowing streaming from Windows PCs, phones and tablets.

The positive publicity generated by the confirmation will be welcomed by Microsoft, following recent comments from developers suggesting that some high-profile cross-platform games including Call of Duty: Ghosts and Battlefield 4 will run at a considerably higher resolution on the PS4 than on the Xbox One.
