Amazon Coins virtual currency launches in the UK

Amazon has launched its Coins virtual currency in the UK. First unveiled in the US in February, the online retailer's currency allows customers to purchase apps, games, and in-app items on the Kindle Fire range of tablets.

For UK shoppers, one Amazon Coin is worth 1 penny. To kick off the currency in Britain, Amazon said it would give away 400 coins to all UK Kindle Fire tablet owners.

As an incentive, buying a large volume of Coins gives the purchaser a beneficial exchange rate. Instead of spending £100 on 10,000 units of the virtual currency, users will only pay £90.

"Amazon Coins is an easy way for Kindle Fire customers to spend money on developers’ apps in the Amazon Appstore, offering app and game developers another substantial opportunity to drive traffic, downloads and increase monetization even further," the company said.

The UK promotion mirrors similar efforts by the online retailer when Amazon Coins launched in the US last May. Amazon gave customers tens of millions of dollars’ worth of free Amazon Coins to spend on developers’ apps on Kindle Fire in the Amazon Appstore.

Amazon Appstore developers will earn their standard 70 % revenue share when customers make purchases using Amazon Coins.
