Windows RT 8.1 boot corruption bug hits Surface RT owners

Microsoft has removed its Windows RT 8.1 operating system update for Surface RT tablets from the Windows store, following reports that the upgrade can prevent the devices from booting.

Released in selected countries on Thursday and internationally on Friday, Windows RT 8.1 joins the full-fat Windows 8.1 in bringing numerous improvements to Microsoft's operating system. Various usability, security and performance tweaks have made it to the latest release, which is being provided as a free and, given that Windows 8 support will end in two years' time, mandatory, upgrade for all existing Windows 8 users.

The launch has not gone smoothly, however. Although the release of Windows 8.1 for desktops, laptops and the company's Surface Pro tablet line remains available, the Surface RT-centric Windows RT 8.1 update has been temporarily removed from the Windows Store due to a nasty bug which can leave users unable to boot their devices.

The flaw, which has not affected all users, causes the boot configuration data file held on the tablet to become corrupt - which prevents the tablet from loading its operating system.

"Microsoft is investigating a situation affecting a limited number of users updating their Windows RT devices to Windows RT 8.1," the company admitted in a statement to customers regarding the issue. "As a result, we have temporarily removed the Windows RT 8.1 update from the Windows Store".

Microsoft has not yet provided a date for when the Windows RT 8.1 update will become available for download again.
