WD unveils My Cloud hybrid NAS, promises to bring cloud storage home

expertreviews.co.uk-siena -

Western Digital has launched My Cloud, a network attached storage (NAS) device that lets you upload files from anywhere in the world directly to your home, rather than storing them on a server in a faceless data centre.

WD calls this personal cloud storage service the "new standard", allowing users to keep media and files at home on their own physical drive and then access them over the internet with any PC or Mac computer, tablet or smartphone (iOS or Android) without the monthly fees usually associated with bulk cloud storage. Users can also attach an external hard disk directly to My Cloud's USB3 port to expand their storage capacity.

My Cloud includes a web-based interface and software which auto-detects the device. Once set up, customers can connect their computers and mobile devices with WD's free desktop and mobile apps. Each My Cloud NAS will ship with a Gigabit Ethernet connection, but naturally upload and download speeds will depend on the speed of your home broadband - which is typically much slower than the fat pipes found in the average data centre.

Like WD's external hard disks and offline NAS devices, My Cloud can double as a backup disk for your PC using the free WD SmartWare Pro software. It's also Time Machine compatible for Apple Mac users.

My Cloud is available in 2 TB, 3 TB, and 4 TB capacities, with prices starting from £130. According to WD, a £125 yearly Dropbox subscription will only net you a tenth of the storage.

My Cloud will be available to buy in the UK later this month.
