Manmohan Singh not worried about US spying, doesn't own mobile or email ID

Even while the rest of the world is on the edge of its seats as stories about top leaders across the world having their mails and phones tracked, India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is a relaxed man. Revelations about US hackings are no cause for concern for the PM since he does not use a mobile phone or even have a personal email ID. In a statement to AFP, Singh’s office said that the 81-year old Prime Minister of the second most populated country in the world did not own a personal mobile phone or use the email service. New Delhi apparently has “no cause for concern” regarding the incessant news of US hacking into leaders of the world.

Of course, his office has an email ID and even a phone, but Singh personally does not operate any of these. While it may sound like an ancient idea for anyone – especially someone who is leading one of the fastest growing economies of the world – to live without these basic forms of communications, Singh’s office is unperturbed since this means that the PM stays away from US scrutiny. This interesting tidbit comes on the back of the news that US’ National Security Agency (NSA) had spied on over 35 of the world’s top leaders. There were no names taken for who could be a part of this group, but clearly, New Delhi believes Singh could not have been one of them. There is a mini-storm brewing regarding the hackings, though. Der Spiegel, a German newspaper, revealed a while back that US agencies may have tapped German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cellphone since 2002. An alarmed Merkel got the European Union to then sign a statement showing “deep concerns” over the US’ spying activities.
