It's complicated: Randi Zuckerberg's new book wants kids to stop using social media

Randi Zuckerberg has ensured at least one awkward family moment this holiday season. Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark's sister has penned a children’s book that addresses the obsessive social-media culture prevalent in many parts of the world, especially in children. The move may cause sparks to fly, and we aren't just talking about the family reunion. As a former Director of Market Development as well as a Spokeswoman for the Facebook, Randi played her part in making Facebook a household name. So it will be interesting to see how the critics' take on the book. The book, titled 'Dot', is about a little girl named (wait for it) Dot who can’t stop fidgeting with her phone. The author, in a blog post says ‘"Dot loves technology. A LOT. She’s obsessed with her devices (sound familiar?), but with a little push, she’s reminded that life’s a little bit richer when you look up from the screen.” Watch Zukerberg talk about the book below:

The book, which is slated to go up for sale on November 5, is an odd move for sure. But there's another title aimed at adults in the pipeline. Called “Dot Complicated”, the title is not as much a tale about device addiction as it is a memoir, presumably inspired by Zuckerberg's Facebook stint. According to the book’s website, Dot Complicated is a "personal and professional story with a fresh guide to understanding technology and how it influences and informs our lives online and off.” The second title is slated to go up for sale at the same time as Dot.

The author may have her work cut out for her, though. The number of users flocking to social networks has been increasing everyday. Facebook, according to an earlier report, now has 82 million Indian users registered in the second quarter of this year. The company, in order to increase access via feature phones, has even developed a “Facebook for Every Phone” app, which is now catering to over 100 million users across the world. So for every Dot that's written about, there are a million out there. It will be interesting to see how much of a difference Zuckerberg’s book makes in this Facebook-crazy world.
