Here’s yet another tidbit about the rumoured Galaxy S5, expected to hit markets early next year. According to ET News Korea, the new device may be getting a 16-megapixel camera module. The report states that both Sony and Samsung LSI will be bidding to be the main supplier of the new CMOS image sensors for the company's new handset. An interesting point to note here is that the 13-megapixel camera currently seen in the Galaxy S4 is supplied by Sony. Samsung will begin sampling SGS5 camera components as early as next month, according to the report, and is likely to select key part suppliers by the end of the year. It is being speculated that company may land up keeping its existing suppliers for the camera module, lens and auto-focusing (AF) actuator, but Sony and Samsung’s System LSI division will be competing to become the main CIS supplier.
S5 to get a 16 megapixel camera?
Sony reportedly holds the most advanced technological power when it comes to CIS, providing 13 million pixels or higher. Sony is reportedly focusing on Samsung’s smartphones for its CIS business. There has not been any word on this from either company, though, so there is no way to validate these claims.
While Sony definitely seems to have the power, Samsung's LSI Division has the advantage of ISOCELL. The latter is a technology that converts sensor structure to make the most use of light gathered in the pixels. A previous report revealed that Samsung is working on an “Eye-Scanning” unlock technology that will allow Samsung Galaxy S5 users to unlock the smartphone by scanning their eyes.
