Amazon is keen on having your ordered goods delivered to you within 30 minutes. The company is now testing delivery packages using drones, CEO Jeff Bezos has announced. On the CBS television programme 60 Minutes, Bezos announced that Amazon is currently testing delivery packages with the help of drones. For those not in the know, drones are unmanned aerial vehicles that can be autonomously controlled by computers within the vehicle or via a remote control.
Get goods in half an hour
Amazon now hopes to use drones to deliver packages that weigh up to five pounds to houses in the amount of time it takes for a pizza to get to your house. In a blog post, the company writes that it hopes by 2015, the drones will be as common a sight as Amazon’s delivery trucks on the road. The programme is dubbed Amazon Prime Air and the goal is to have packages in the customer's hands in 30 minutes or less. “It looks like science fiction, but it's real. From a technology point of view, we'll be ready to enter commercial operations as soon as the necessary regulations are in place. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is actively working on rules for unmanned aerial vehicles,” writes the company in the post. It continues that the FAA is actively working on rules and an approach for unmanned aerial vehicles currently that will prioritise public safety. The company says that safety will remain its top priority even as it tries to deliver goods via drones and that the vehicles it builds will be made with multiple redundancies and designed to commercial aviation standards.Even while the idea of having your goods delivered to you by remotely operated drones seems fancy, it will be years even before it hits the US and other countries will have to wait even longer.
