5.5in LG GX smartphone to hit the UK next year

G has announced the GX smartphone, a follow-up handset to the G Pro which, unlike its predecessor, should actually launch in the UK.

The LG GX has a redesigned 9.2mm thick chassis which weighs 167g and contains a 5.5in Full HD 1,920x1,080 display. Otherwise, the specifications are remarkably similar to the LG G Pro: a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor is backed by 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, along with the same user-replaceable 3,140mAh battery.

Connectivity, too, matches the LG G Pro: 4G LTE is included as standard, along with quality-boosting Voice over LTE (VoLTE) if supported by the network. Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi and Near Field Communication (NFC) radios are also included. A 13-megapixel camera with Full HD video support can be found on the rear and there's also a 2.1-megapixel camera at the front.

The GX will run Google's Android Jelly Bean operating system, with LG's own customisations including a lock screen dubbed Smart Day. It includes media control capabilities, a voice-activated navigation system for in-car use, Smart Memo software with cloud connectivity, and an IR blaster to control selected Blu-ray, DVD, TV, audio and other consumer products. Those with LG Smart TVs, meanwhile, can receive alerts from the handset, including text messages and calls, directly on the TV screen.

LG has announced that it is to launch the LG GX internationally, but has not yet provided a date for UK availability.
