UPDATED 21/11/13: The launch is at midnight tonight and after eight years of the brilliant Xbox 360 we'll finally have a next-gen console in the UK
It's just a matter of hours now until the Xbox One launch, when millions of Xbox One Day One Edition consoles, complete with Kinect and a free copy of FIFA 14, will be delivered to those who have pre-ordered
XBOX ONE STOCK - MIDNIGHT LAUNCHES
Tesco has announced that it will have stock to sell from more than 100 of its Tesco Extra stores at midnight tonight, so if you're keen to buy a console at launch then phone your local store and see if they're participating.
If you live in London then Game has 200 Xbox One's going on sale, first-come first-served, today at MIDDAY from its Boxpark Store in Shoreditch. So if you're a gamer of a hipster persuasion, who doesn't have to work like normal people, yet can still afford a £429 console, then this will be right up your street (possibly literally). You then have to come back later to pick-up your purchase, plus apparently you get an invite to a 'VIP' launch event.
If you haven't pre-ordered then Tesco looks to be your best bet for midnight
XBOX ONE PRE-ORDER
Don't fancy queuing but still want an Xbox One before Christmas? Then you'd better be prepared to pay through the nose for it.
Amazon opened pre-orders on the Xbox One way back in May, so if you're only thinking of it now, you're a little late to the party. In fact if you wanted a console delivered tomorrow then you would have had to pre-order by August the 14th. Worse news is that Amazon has now stated that next-gen console pre-orders taken since the 13th of November may not arrive in time for Christmas.
The Xbox one page currently reads: 'Please note: Due to high demand, customers who ordered this Xbox One Standard Edition console from August 15 may receive their console after release date. Orders placed up to and including August 14 will be dispatched to meet the release date. Orders placed from November 13 may not be delivered before Christmas.'
Other retailers are using the stock shortage to profit from desperate gamers. One good example being this Xbox One with six games for £699 from Game, which is guaranteed for Christmas. In fact the only consoles from the retailer for the holidays are all priced at around this level.
Argos doesn't appear to have any stock at present. But Tesco has stated that it will be receiving more stock closer to Christmas, so that's a good place to snoop around.
XBOX ONE DAY ONE EDITION
If you've already pre-ordered a console, or are happy to pay ludicrous money to some dirtbag on eBay who bought one to profit from the likes of you, then you should receive the Xbox One Day One Edition of the console. This does mean that you'll be getting a code in the box for FIFA 14, but other than that the special edition of the console is pretty unspecial.
The controller is the only difference, it has a Day One logo on the middle and comes with a chromed effect d-pad. You also get an achievement on Xbox Live if you like that sort of thing.
XBOX ONE PRICE
The Xbox One costs £429 for the console, one controller, Kinect and the various leads you need. Official accessories are now available. An Xbox one controller costs £45 on Amazon or £55 in a bundle with the Play & Charge kit. An official headset will be included in the box, but you may not need it often as the Kinect sensor has noise-isolating microphones that should be able to pick up your voice clearly over the sound of your games.
Console manufacturers frequently sell their systems at a loss, making money from online services and games sales over time. Microsoft has set the RRP for first party Xbox One games at £49.99 here in the UK, which is the same as the Xbox 360. Most retailers discount this RRP, so £45-48 is about what you'll pay for a game at launch.
