Microsoft has revealed that it sold one million Xbox One consoles in the first 24 hours of it going on sale on Friday. The console, which launched in 13 countries around the world including the UK, comfortably outsold the Xbox 360 to become the biggest launch in Microsoft's relatively short console history.

"Xbox One is now sold out at most retailers," Microsoft said. "We are working to replenish stock as fast as possible to meet the unprecedented demand from our customers."

That one million figure may sound impressive, but it's worth pointing out that Sony managed to sell just as many PS4 consoles in the same period, despite only launching in North America. It won't arrive in the UK until the 29th of November.

In the UK, twice as many Xbox One consoles were sold as Xbox 360 units when that launched in 2005. Ten of the 16 Xbox One launch titles managed to break into the UK's top 40 games chart, which only counts physical high street sales. With a bigger day one selection of digital downloads than the Xbox 360, it's looking very likely that more games were sold over the weekend than during the previous generation's launch too.

In the first two days, gamers of the new Xbox One killed over 60 million zombies in Dead Rising 3, drove over 3.6 million miles in Forza Motorsport 5 and defeated over 8.5 million enemies in Ryse: Son of Rome.

Xbox corporate VP of marketing and strategy Yusuf Mehdi said "Seeing thousands of excited fans lined up to get their Xbox One and their love for gaming was truly a special moment for everyone on the Xbox team." The company is now working to replenish stocks to ensure as many gamers get a console in time for Christmas.
