Snapchat surpasses Facebook's daily photo numbers? Not really

Contrary to rumours that have been doing the round of tech circles in a while, Snapchat has not raced passed Facebook when it comes to uploading daily photos… yet. Even while Snapchat is going around town saying that it is now processing 400 million snaps per day, 50 million more than the number of photos uploaded on Facebook daily, the number includes videos too. Snapchat, currently the darling of the startup world, has managed to reach tizzying heights already. Business Insider has reported that Snapchat had managed to double the 200 million snaps mark since June this year to 400 million. Evan Spiegel confirmed to TechCrunch that his self-destructing message service was indeed seeing 400 million snaps each day.

Snapping numbers

However, one must take into consideration that this number also includes a fair amount of videos sent across as snaps on the service. The 350 million images tag for Facebook are purely picture based, not taking into consideration video. This does not mean that Snapchat could be too far behind. The fact remains that photo snaps still remain a favourite for the users and if a breakdown is ordered, it may just well beat Facebook. Facebook’s numbers also does not consider yet another aspect: Instagram images. The filter-based photo sharing service is owned by Facebook and sees 55 million images uploaded to its service daily. Despite this, it will be hard for anyone to say that Snapchat is not a threat to Facebook. After all, teens are swarming onto Snapchat, which doubles up as an effective sexting app, and deserting Facebook fast. Snapchat’s Spiegel seems to be valuing the company very highly and has already rejected about three offers of acquisition recently. While WeChat company Tencent said it wanted to value the startup at $3 billion to $4 billion, Facebook was willing to offer the company $3 billion. Google was willing to pay $4 billion, one-upping Mark Zuckerberg’s offer. Spiegel is, however, waiting for 2014 to talk to companies further. He hopes that the holiday season will push the numbers of users and snaps up, making the company able to command even more.
