Samsung's next flagship smartphone, which is expected to be known as the Galaxy S5, will likely ship with a 64-bit Exynos 6 processor, according to ARM - the company which makes the base silicon for Samsung's CPUs.
A senior ARM executive, speaking to the Korea Herald on condition of anonymity, said that the company had finalised a deal with Samsung to provide the upcoming Galaxy S5 with the new chip, which would support 64-bit operations for the first time in an Android device.
According to the unnamed employee, "Executives from Samsung and ARM had a meeting today. They discussed the ARM 64-bit chip, which is expected to be used in Samsung’s smartphone next year".
If the report is accurate, Samsung is clearly playing catch-up with Apple. The company introduced a 64-bit processor to mobile devices for the first time with the iPhone 5s and iPad Air earlier this year.
In the same report, the unnamed ARM official also mentioned the possibility of a 128-bit chip for 2015 and beyond, but said there were no official plans as yet to launch one.
