Making use of Apple’s new controller-friendly APIs in iOS 7, Logitech has unveiled its iPhone game controller. Designed a bit like an SNES controller, it has two shoulder buttons, four face buttons and a d-pad. Currently, the controller, dubbed PowerShell, is available for pre-order through Logitech’s website for $99.99, which roughly translates to Rs 6,280. Sadly enough, though, the PowerShell is only compatible with iPhone 5, iPhone 5s and 5th generation iPod touch. You read that right: there’s no support for the iPhone 5c.
The PowerShell has an SNES-styled button layout
Interestingly, the controller also features an integrated battery weighing in at 1,500 mAh. This, added with the iPhone's own battery, should boost gaming time by quite a bit. To charge the controller’s battery, one simply has to connect it to a power source through the microUSB slot. As an added bonus, this also charges the iPhone if it is connected to the PowerShell. The controller is compatible with any game that features iOS 7’s new controller-centric APIs. It doesn’t require any extra download. As more iPhone owners buy controllers, the App Store will start categorising games according to whether or not they support controllers.PowerShell doesn’t block users out of any essential phone features, and features slots where the phone’s camera fits in, allowing users to take pictures without taking the iPhone out of the controller. There are also slots where the phone’s volume buttons and the silent-mode toggle sit. The controller doesn’t seem to have any release date yet, but we expect it to hit stores some time in December.
